| Report: | Some tight matches with the Warlingham Woefuls showing strength and stamina coming off the final bend to take the tape on a dip, for a hard fought victory. First up were Gary and Alex who in a battle of mis-hits, managed to save their strings for another day, while giving their frames a good pounding. Meanwhile on court 1 Dave was going down to some cultured play from John. Next up was James and Bedford in an epic 5 setter. James went off like a train but at 5-0 up in the second obviously got off at the wrong stop, while Bedford gently caressed all his soft drops into the bottom of the tin. Not a match for purists. However James hung on long enough to the guard carriage, to get back on track and win in the fifth, with match balls to each player, Bedford obviously wanted to get to the bar, as he tinned an easy ball to give James the match. On the other court, Marc was being given a squash lesson by Vaughan, but as youngsters are these days, never keen to learn, Marc doesn't understand when he is beaten, and kept running and running to give Vaughan harder game than he expected. In the end the stroke player beat the runner - but only just. That left Eric and Jon to decide the match. With some crafty play Eric was quickly 2-0 up and then on match ball in the third hit a lovely winner, dropped his racket to shake hands, only to see Jon pick up this "winner" and play one of his own! Like Marc he doesn't know when he is beaten - youngsters of today just have no respect for their elders. After another few match balls Jon managed to grab the 3rd, and then the 4th. So nicely set up for a finale, but Jon ultimately, ran out of legs leaving the fat old man with the win. A good match all round and a decent bunch of guys. We look forward to the 130 mile round trip return! |
